Berlin Emerging as a Hub for life sciences and AI Innovation
Dr. Andreas Schmidt on Europe’s potential in life sciences and AI, Berlin as an innovation hub, and connecting capital with scientific breakthroughs.
In the run-up to bio:cap, we spoke with Dr. Andreas Schmidt, Managing Director of Springboard Health Angels, about what makes Europe - and Berlin in particular - an exciting region for life sciences and AI innovation.
“Germany and Europe have everything it takes: great scientists, excellent clinicians, strong universities and clinical institutions, and actually enough capital,” Schmidt explained. “Now putting it together in a new, innovative way is a great opportunity—and that’s the traction we have now and should work on.”
On Berlin as a growing life sciences hub, he added: “Berlin is internationally seen as a hub for digital innovation. And suddenly, all of life sciences, all of health, is becoming very digital. So there is now a new bridge forming between digital and life sciences. Everyone in the world is looking at what will happen in Berlin.”

On the connection between life sciences and AI, Schmidt noted: “I think there is no other industry that creates as much data as health and life science. What do we do with that data? We need AI to develop new therapies and use them in the smartest way. It’s a natural match.”
Finally, on the importance of platforms connecting capital and innovation, he said: “That’s really the tricky point in Germany and Europe. We don’t have enough venture capital. There’s plenty of wealth, plenty of money—but people don’t yet speak the same language. If we can create a new environment under one roof, we have a tremendous opportunity here.”
